The everyday grain of Old Mysore and Malnad. Ragi mudde (steamed balls) is eaten with saaru or huli. High in calcium and iron, it is central to Karnataka's food identity.

Saaru

Saaru

ಸಾರು

A thin, intensely spiced Karnataka broth — lighter than sambar but more complex. Eaten poured over rice or with ragi mudde. Each region has its own saaru powder blend.

Huli

Huli

A tamarind-based lentil and vegetable stew — Karnataka's answer to Tamil sambar, but with a distinct spice powder and often less sweet. Essential to any Karnataka thali.
